Making a great portrait is one that tells something about the person. It is natural, rather than contrived. It is one that emphasizes the good points and celebrates the joy of living. It is much more than a technically correct image on paper.
It's an interesting phenomenon how two photos that are compositionally similar and technically correct can be so different. They are after all, only images on paper.
Or are they? As many travelers know, some civizations are wary of the photographic process because they feel it captures their soul. In some respects, however, this is the essence of good portraiture.
I don't purport to capture a person's soul, but the human species is blessed with many intangibles that can be reflected in a portrait. It is this emotional content that gives a photo depth. The viewer can feel such things as warmth, joy and love, in addition to observing an image.
